Noem v. Al Otro Lado

The fight to protect the right to seek asylum is headed to the highest court in the land.

Asylum Saves Lives.

Asylum Saves Lives.

For decades, the U.S. asylum system has extended a crucial lifeline to people fleeing persecution in their home countries. Families, children, and adults who go through the asylum process have found safety, freedom, and community in the United States.

Asylum saves lives. But the Trump administration is fighting to severely restrict access to the asylum process. On November 17, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court granted the administration’s request to review a Ninth Circuit decision that had struck down the government’s former “turnback” policy, which was officially known as “metering.” Under that policy, border officers physically blocked people from presenting themselves at ports of entry along the southern border to seek asylum, in violation of U.S. law.

Although the government ended the turnback policy in 2021, the Trump administration sought Supreme Court review of this particular case as part of its broader crusade to expand executive power and erode the rights of people seeking safety.

Our communities won’t let the Trump administration dismantle our asylum system and upend the rule of law without a fight.  Together, we’re calling on our leaders to stand up for people seeking safety, and to say it loud and clear: No turning back.
